My neurosurgical brain tumor research team has made significant contributions in the fields of brain tumor immunotherapy and multi-drug treatment. We invented and developed Gliadel® wafers to intraoperatively deliver chemotherapy to brain tumors. This work has been expanded to include local delivery of anti-angiogenic therapies, chemotherapeutic agents and resistance modifiers for primary and metastatic brain tumors. I have also worked with collaborators to develop and synthesize new classes of polymers and microchips for drug delivery.

I have extensive PI/CI experience on brain tumor and neuro-oncology grants. I was Co-Principal Investigator of the NCI Cooperative Agreement for Phase I-II Testing for Brain Tumors, "New Approaches for Brain Tumor Therapy" (CA 62475 and CA 62474 [1994-2008]); and Co-investigator of the NIH "Microchip Drug Delivery System" (RO1 EB006365 [2007-2012]).

I was the Principal Investigator of a National Cooperative Drug Discovery Group (NCDDG CA52857) entitled “Controlled Release Polymers for Brain Tumors”.  In 1996 this collaborative research resulted in the first FDA approved new treatment for brain tumors in 23 years.

Tumor type: rodent brain tumor cell lines, established human glioma lines, primary cell lines derived from patient samples.
